“Black Friday” considered racist? Streator First To Introduce Diverse Deals Day
Black Friday? “Why does it gotta be black?” asks a 16 year old white girl who lives in Streator. In the fast pace ever growing politically correct landscape, it’s hard to keep up with what is offensive today, but lucky for you Streator Mysteries did the research. While we couldn’t find anyone who specifically has a problem with the traditional name for the day of deals, some Streator citizens suggest a preemptive change to sale’s name, thus “Diverse Deals Day” was born!
Some deals are great, other’s not so much, but the new title represents the diversity among the deals offered by the event previously known as black Friday. A dollar off a flat screen TV is hardly a deal, and may pale in comparison to the hundreds you can save off other products, it’s important to represent the so called “less desired” deals as well. We had a hard time figuring this one out, but luckily the previously mentioned 16 year old explained it to us further.
“We need to be a more diverse society. Not all deals are the same, but we should embrace our difference. We need less of these huge sales that have dominated black Friday for years, and should focus more on marginalized deals. You don’t read about them in the flyers, they are rarely advertised, but they are an important part of our society.” She explained.
Other’s take issues with Black Friday, but for completely different reasons. “For far too long Friday has been the exclusive owner of after thanksgiving sales. One day out of the seven has been known for this historic event, but what about the other 6 days? Where is their representation?” Local certified crazy person Sarah G. says. While nothing has been confrirmed, some are considering passing the torch, and renaming the Holliday “Black Monday”, yet local historians take issues with this name for some reason.
But the biggest issue of all might be the lack luster sales. What once used to be a grand after thanksgiving event, has been shuffled around the past few years. Even now there are several so called black Friday sales throughout the entire month of November, thus cheapening the effect of the once massive sale. It seems retailers can’t quite capture the magic of the past.
What is your take? Is the name racist? Is it time to change the day of the week that host the sales? Are you just plain tired of buying inferior products for slightly reduced prices once a year? We don’t know what it would take to restore Black Friday to it’s former glory, but we do know the day is on life support. There are no easy answers to these questions, but they needed to be asked none the less. In any case, Streator Mysteries wishes you a happy “politically correct holiday” to you.
